On this episode of Coral Currents, I sat down with Erin Simpson— an extraordinary speech-language pathologist and BCBA with deep experience supporting deaf and hard of hearing students. Our conversation was a powerful reminder that at the heart of our work is one simple truth: every child deserves access to a full and rich language.

Erin shared how her passion for deaf studies began as an undergraduate, eventually leading her to work at the Beverly School for the Deaf. Today, she continues to champion language access in all its forms — spoken, signed, or both — while also directing an ABA services company in Massachusetts.

One of the most impactful themes we discussed was the myth that learning sign language can delay spoken language development. As Erin explained, the research shows the opposite: early exposure to sign strengthens language development and gives children a stronger foundation, especially when auditory access may be inconsistent.

Erin also emphasized the importance of starting small with families. Parents don’t need to become fluent in ASL overnight; even using a few signs within daily routines — at bath time, during meals, or while hiking together — can empower families and help children thrive.

Collaboration was another key theme. Erin reminded us that true success happens when professionals work together with respect and when students themselves are given a voice in shaping their goals. From interpreters and teachers of the deaf to speech therapists and families, building a connected team ensures that children are supported holistically.

Finally, Erin highlighted the importance of identity and cultural pride. Exposing children to Deaf culture, storytelling, and positive role models helps them feel empowered and confident in who they are.

For providers, Erin’s advice was both grounding and inspiring: listen first, respect family values, and remember that you don’t need to know everything to start supporting. Language is the foundation—if a child has access to it, the rest can follow.

This episode is packed with insights, strategies, and resources that will ripple outward to make us all better clinicians. Don’t miss it— tune in to Coral Currents Episode 10 to hear the full conversation with Erin Simpson.
